Qur’an, Sura Al Fatiha [The Opening Sura], Chapter 1

1. Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

In the name of Allah, The One Who Acts with Mercy, The Source of Mercy

2. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘alamin

All gratitude and praise belong to Allah, the Lord of the worlds

3. Ar Rahmanir Rahim

The One Who Acts with Mercy, The Source of Mercy

4. Maliki Yawmid Din

The Owner of the Dominion on Judgment Day

5. Iyaka na’ budu wa iyaka nasta’in

We connect and devote ourselves to You, and we ask for Your help

6. Ihdinas siratal mustaqim

Guide us to the confirmed and sure path

7. Siratallazina an ‘amta ‘alayhim, ghayril maghdubi ‘alayhim walad daalin (Amin)

The path of those on whom You have bestowed Your grace, not of those who misguide themselves and deserve Your wrath (Amen)

Al Hadi – The Guide

Al Hakim – The Wise One

Al Hamid –The One Who Deserves All Gratitude and Praise; The One Who Is Glorified

Al Malik – The Ruler; The King; The Owner of the Dominion

Al Rab – The Lord; The Master

Al Rabbil ‘Alamin – The Sustainer, Cherisher, Lord of the Worlds

Al Rahim – The Source of Mercy

Al Rahman – The One Who Acts with Mercy


‘alamin: worlds; realms; creation

‘abd, abid: devotee; dependent; subject

Alhamdulillah: All gratitude and praise belong to Allah 

sirat al mustaqim, siratin(un, an) mustaqim: straight path; confirmed and sure path

tasbih: glorification; chanting in glorification; repeating the names of Allah with the help of prayer beads; prayer beads; rosary; continuous glorification through repetition of Allah’s names

Yawm al Din: Judgment Day

zikr: remembrance; mentioning Allah’s name repeatedly with certain intention and contemplation; glorification or supplication; reminder
