namaz: formal Islamic worship that is observed five times daily; also known as salat
rak’at: cycle of standing, bowing, kneeling/sitting and prostrating during formal Islamic prayer
Okay now, I want you to practice this right now.
I will tell you what to contemplate.
Now we are going to do two rak’ats. I mean, with you now, I am going to lead you for two rak’ats. This is not a regular prayer. At least two rak’ats, you need to pray like this every day and you need to contemplate.
We are going now.
(Shaykh Taner begins to lead prayer.)
A’uzu billahi minash shaytanir rajim.
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast.
Allahu Akbar
How Allah is Great, that is what you are thinking now.
Now I am going to recite, you are going to join me.
You have to mean to Allah.
(Click here for a PDF file with meanings of sura Al Fatiha and suratul Ikhlas)
You are talking to Allah:
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil alamin

Right here, you are asking Allah to guide you.
“ihdina”, you have to say it from the heart.

What you are saying is as You did to Hazrate Ibrahim [Abraham], as you give peace and blessings upon Hazrate Ibrahim, so You do it for Hazrate Muhammad and his family. As you made Hazrate Ibrahim and his family baraka, like holy, please make Hazrate Muhammad and his family holy too.
Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanatan wafil akhirati hasanatan waqina ‘azaaban nar
O Allah please give us goodness in this world and in the Hereafter and protect us from the torment of Fire.
Now we are saying Salaams to the world:
As-Salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah
As-Salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah
Now, I want you to pray two rak’ats like this.
But each time when you say Allahu Akbar, you are shifting a level of Heaven, right? You have to imagine that, and you are seeing all the space.
We are not worshiping the space. We are worshiping Allah Who is the Maker of that, Who is behind all this, Who owns all this space. We are worshiping Allah. Allah!
Do it!
And of His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not adore or prostrate to the sun or the moon, but adore and prostrate to Allah Who created them, if it is truly to Him you are connecting and devoting yourselves. (Fussilat:37)
(Note: Please prostrate, as is customary, when reading this and other sajda ayats.)
The mulk of the universes and the earth belongs to Allah. Allah is able to do all things. Surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and in the difference of night and day are signs (from Allah) for ulul albab. Such are those who do zikr of Allah standing, and sitting and reclining, and contemplate the creation of the heavens and the earth, and say, “Our Rab, You did not create all this for nothing! Glory be to You! Please protect us from the torment of the Fire. (Aal-e Imran:189-191)
ulul albab: the people of understanding and mature discernment; the people of zikr; the people of reasoning; those who follow and contemplate Allah’s reminders
