Allah sent the Qur’an so that we can understand it and apply it in our life.
So why are we here? So that we can learn what Allah wants from us and do what Allah wants from us and teach others what Allah wants and help them to do it.
We should read the Qur’an and understand it. If we understand English, then we should read it in English. If we understand French, then we should read it in French, every day at least three pages. Firstly, we need to know what Allah wants from us because Allah created us. What does He want? We need to know!
We should ask ourselves, why is it that we chose Islam? Is it because we were born muslim? One should think: why am I a muslim? In Islam Allah speaks to us Himself. In the Qur’an Allah speaks to us. Why is this important? Because we are after the Truth. The first muslim was Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). What was he after? He was after the Truth. We need to be after the Truth. Some “muslims” want to have a relationship with Allah in the Hereafter. As sufis, we want to have a relationship with Allah here, now! Because Allah is here too. Why should we wait for after we die? It may be too late.
Hu wal-Awwalu wal-Akhiru wal-Zahiru wal-Batinu wa-huwa bi kulli shay-in Alim
He is Al Awwal [The Former] and Al Akhir [The Latter] and Al Zahir [The Outer] and Al Batin [The Inner], and He knows everything. (Al Hadid:3)
Islam: surrender; submission; accepting Allah’s terms; making peace with Allah and His decrees
muslim: one who accepts Allah’s terms; one who accepts and makes peace with Allah and His decrees
