On the 27th night of the month of Rajab, we celebrate Al Isra [The Night Journey] of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Jerusalem and his Mi’raj [Ascension] through the seven heavens.
Qur’an, Sura Al Isra, The Night Journey, Verse 1
May Allah be Glorified. He Who carried His devotee (Muhammad) during the night from the Masjid Al Haram [mosque in Mecca] to the Masjid Al Aqsa [mosque in Jerusalem], which is in a blessed area, so that We may enlighten him about Our signs. There is no doubt He is Al Sami [The Hearer; The Listener], Al Basir [The Seer].
Translated in English by Es-Seyyid Es-Shaykh Taner Vargonen el Ansari
Let us talk about Sufis. Sufis are worried about themselves, should be worried about themselves. Am I doing the right thing? And I have been telling you this, and Allah has been telling you this, all you have to do is ask this question before you do anything:
If I do this, will Allah be pleased?
Intend and hope for Allah’s goodwill in your deeds before you do it. Put this intention in your life as a principle and follow it up. Then Allah will put you among His people whom He calls ‘muttaqin‘.
Now, as a Sufi, you want to serve the purpose. The purpose of our creation is to achieve the state of humanity that Allah is looking for and meant for. That is called insan-i kamil. You attain this at the fourth level of nafs [ego]. When you come to the fourth level insha Allah [God willing], you will be insan-i kamil. After insan-i kamil, you go into Muhabbatullah. So you have to dive into this, according to my Shaykh, with courage and selflessness. Then the next three degrees/levels, you get into the journey to earn the level of Habibullah. That is the level of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which got him to Mi’raj.
This is an edited excerpt of a Sohbet given on May 4, 2013 by Murshid Shaykh Taner Vargonen Ansari and published on the occasion of Mi’raj in 2023.
