When you are in a desperate situation, when Allah squeezes you, when your kids are no good and the world is getting narrow on you, you are being attacked from every direction, then you go to your nafs, “I! How come this is happening to me? I am so desperate. Everybody wants a piece of me. Everybody is after me! I! I! But I am guided! I! I! I! I! I! I! I! I! I! I! I!” Then, “Why is Allah doing this to me? Here I want to do this and Allah is doing this to me!” Etc., etc.

Allah is good! Allah is great!

When you find yourself with “I”, then go to: “Allah is good, Allah is great. Allah is good, Allah is great.”

Then we should keep saying that. When we see ourselves, because Allah loves to test everybody twice a year, we should say, “Allah is good, Allah is great! Allah is good, Allah is great!” So that we will not be with “me”! So we will not feel sorry for “me”. We will not feel angry because this is happening to “me”. Why am I feeling angry? Because I feel I am being abused, I feel I am being this, I, I, I, I, I! So it means I am watching out for me! But my job is to watch out for Allah! So Allah is good, Allah is great.

Verses from Qur’an

Do they not see that they are put into a trial once or twice a year? But still they do not turn to Allah in repentance, nor do they take heed. (Al Tawba:126)

And among human beings there are some who profess to believe in Allah, but when they suffer for Allah’s cause, they mistake the persecution of human beings for the punishment of Allah. And then if victory comes from your Rab [Lord] they will say, “We were with you all the way.” Do you not realize that Allah knows best what is hidden in the sudur [chests; innermost selves] of all His creation? (Al Ankabut:10)

O you who believe, do not get into the habit of making a lot of assumptions (about others), because some assumptions are (wrong and are therefore) sins. Do not spy on or backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of their dead brother? You would surely hate doing that, would you not? Have taqwa, as Allah has prescribed, and know that truly, Allah is Tawwab [Accepting] and Rahim [Full of Mercy]. (Al Hujurat:12)

O human beings! Surely, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes and communities so that you may know one another. Know that the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the one who has the most taqwa (i.e., the one who is best in conduct towards Allah and His creation, and is most deeply conscious of Allah). Know that Allah is Alim and Khabir [All-Aware]. (Al Hujurat:13)
