But if you are thankful, He is pleased with that in you. (Al Zumar:7)

Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah’s party, and surely, Allah’s party are the successful ones. (Al Mujadilah:22)

All this is training so that you can be in the presence of Allah and when Allah said, “I am going to create a khalifa on earth, you will not say “Why! Why!…” Our job is to love Allah and Allah’s love is so big, He can love all of you and more.

Put Allah First! Allah will be pleased!

There is one thing I want to teach you. Your actions should not be reactionary. You got that? When you are confronted with your action, in response to an assault, to an accusation, to any situation, ask Allah: What do You want me to say or do in this situation? You can do this if your heart is open. If your heart is not open then you should still ask and wait what Allah wants you to do. When you do this, you have put Allah in the first priority so you show the intention that you are surrendering.

Be Patient and Consult! Allah will be pleased!

Ask Allah: What do You want me to do in this situation, or what do You want me to say? If you have no answer then do nothing. Wait. Unless you are dying, you have the right to defend yourself physically. These are in general, and in special cases. For example, when you are sick, you ask, “What shall I do? Shall I wait and die or shall I go to the doctor?” Of course, first you go to the doctor! If your house is burning, call the fire department.

But say somebody is swearing at you, trying to provoke you. Why are they doing this? So that Satan can get your energy into the negative side. So you have to be patient especially in these cases and say, “O Allah, what do You want me to say?” Allah says, “Say this.” You say this. If He does not say anything, then just be patient, just do nothing and CONSULT before you do anything, CONSULT. That is what Allah says.

Qur’an References

Consult with them about how to run the affairs (of the expedition); then, when you reach a decision, refer your affairs to Allah. Without a doubt, Allah loves those who refer their affairs to Him. (Aal-e Imran:159)

And when some news of peace, or something that would give them fear, comes to them, they immediately spread it around. Instead, had they referred it to the Messenger and to those who are in authority among them, those among them who are able to think (and discover the truth) would have been able to investigate and evaluate the matter. And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy and kindness, you would have followed Satan (having allowed Satan to distort your thinking), except a few. (Al Nisa:83)

O you who believe, obey Allah, and the Messenger, and those in authority among you. If you have a conflict or controversy concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Day of the Hereafter. (If you think more deeply even than this) it is more beneficial and a better action (for you). (Al Nisa:59)

Ask the people of zikr [repeated remembrance with contemplation], if you do not know. (Al Nahl:43)

Do not react! Allah will be pleased!

In every action, ask yourself especially young people, I tell this, what shall we do? I want you to do only one thing, at the beginning, whatever you do, you ask yourself, “If I do this, will Allah be pleased at all?” Then you will always be looking for Allah’s will. And that way you are getting yourself out of the way. If somebody comes and provokes you and then swears at you, you swear at them back, you have the right to but then it will be a reaction to his or her action. So I do not want to swear at him now just because he swears at me. I will swear at him when I want to swear at him. It is my choice! Otherwise it is not my choice, it is just a reaction to what the other guy is doing.

Qur’an References

…except from the one to whom Al Rahman has given permission, and whose word He is pleased with. (Ta Ha:109)

Who is better than the one who, when they speak, asks for Allah’s guidance, and acts rightly with it, and invites others to Allah, and says, “Surely, I am among the muslimin [those who accept Allah’s terms]”? Good and evil deeds are not the same. Give a positive, good response to an evil deed; then you will see that one who was once your enemy has become your close friend. But no one is granted this except those who are patient and persevere. Indeed, no one is granted it except those who are immensely fortunate. (Fussilat:33-35)

Have the right intention! Allah will be pleased!

So this simple thing will save you a lot of grief and make you do the right thing because your job is… what is your job? Your job is to do what Allah wants you to do. Your job is to please Allah, so there can be a loving relationship with Allah. That is what we are after. We are not after Paradise. We are not after praying, and performing salat and Haj and this and that so we can secure the Paradise. I have news for you. This is a hadith sharif: Nobody can go to Paradise unless Allah forgives them. The sahabas [companions] asked “Does this include you, O Rasulullah? And he said, “Yes it includes me.” So yes, you are praying, yes you are doing this, but is Allah accepting it? Are you doing it right? Do you have the right intention? If your intention is to go to Paradise, so you are not serving Allah, you are afraid of Allah and doing things for YOU. As sufis, we want to love Allah, that’s it. If Allah wants to love me in the hell, that is okay.

Qur’an References

Their purpose is only to seek the Wajha [Countenance; Essence; Personal Being (Zat)] of their Rab[Lord], The Most High. (Al Layl:20)

But if you are thankful, He is pleased with that in you. (Al Zumar:7)

Allah will say, “This is a Day in which their truthfulness will profit the truthful ones. For them there are jannas with rivers flowing at their feet; they will live in there forever. Allah is content and pleased with them, and they are content and pleased with Allah. That is the great success!” And to Allah belongs the mulk of the universes and the earth and whatever is within, and He is able to do all things.(Al Ma’ida:119-120)
